JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: Which is better Speaker?

JBL makes a number of the great Bluetooth speakers around. And therefore the Charge 4 and Flip 5 are two of its best. They both are affordable, great-sounding speakers that are built to last—best for that camping trip or party at the beach.

But which is best for you? We give both the JBL Charge 4 and JBL Flip 5 five stars, so whichever you choose, you will definitely get a great performance. But there are a few differences between them.

So let’s run down all the features of both the speakers and see which JBL speaker comes out on top.

JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: Price

When we first reviewed the Charge 4, it cost £140, but it’s now available for around £100. Flip 5 is that the newer of the 2 speakers, but it costs less it’s now available for around £90.

Not a huge discount, but it’s money off all the same. And a really good price for one among the best Bluetooth speakers around. The Flip 5 is best as per the worth.

JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: Design

Both the Flip 5 and Charge 4 are chunky and solidly built but still portable enough to carry them in the bag. Both speakers are at their best laid horizontally, as they need bass radiators at each end.

Both are IPX7 rated, which says they’re waterproof in up to a meter of water for up to a half-hour. But the Charge 4 features a protect its charging port, which adds extra protection.

The Charge 4 weighs 960g, while the Flip 5 weight just 540g. So for those on the go, the latter could be the higher choice. For its extra portability, the JBL Flip 5 just takes this round.

JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: Battery Life

Battery life can make or smash a Bluetooth speaker. As they’re wireless, they free you from the shackles of being plugged in. But if the battery conks out, you will need a mains socket or, at best, a portable power bank.

Flip 5 gives you 12 hours of run time from one charge, and because of its USB-C port, it will take just 2.5 hours to charge from empty to full.

But that’s beaten simply by the Charge 4; the battery is one among its strong suits. On a full charge, it provides 20 hours of run time. That’s enough for even the hardiest of pool parties.

JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: Sound quality

Pairing with both is an absolute doddle, and therefore the Bluetooth connection.

Charge 4 provides excellent sound. It isn’t as bass-heavy as you would possibly expect, given its weight, but the low end is certainly ample, which allows you to pay greater attention to the mids and treble. The JBL Charge 4 produce beats with a convincing punch, but like every speaker this size, there’s a limit to its bass floor. It can’t produce real sub-bass.

But at high volume, the strain starts to point out a bit. With certain tracks, the proportion of bass is reduced, and therefore the upper-mids take on a harder tone. It does not have 360-degree sound, so its placement matters.

Flip 5 is first up and puts in a powerful performance. Bass is weighty – especially for such a little speaker – and there is much texture to the audio. The treble and midrange also great, with the soundstage being very open and spacious. It beats the Award-winning competition, which is all I will like to mention.

JBL Charge 4 vs Flip 5: More features

Both speakers have a mode called PartyBoost, which allows you to connect two compatible speakers together to play in stereo. But Charge 4 also shows a feature called Connect+, which essentially does an equivalent thing but with older JBL speakers.

Charge 4 also features a rather massive ace up its sleeve: it can charge your phone. Because of its humungous battery, it not only features a mammoth run time, it also can charge your phone, tablet, or anything that juices up via USB from a 5V supply.

They don’t have wi-fi, native support for voice assistants, and therefore the app is pretty basic. Nothing wrong with that. Charge 4 has taken this around.

It was always getting to be close, pitting two of the great JBL Bluetooth speakers head to go. The Flip 5 just pips it 3 to 2. It’s superior sound, greater portability, and a lower price.

But Charge 4 remains an excellent speaker. Its mammoth battery gives you almost a day’s run time, and it can charge your phone when you’re far away from home, which might be a dealbreaker for the campers among us. In a comparison of JBL Charge 4 and JBL Flip 5, Charge 4 is a dealbreaker if you want great battery life.
