Advantage: As we see in HiFiMan HE 400i Review, it is a large full-size headphone and uses planar-magnetic drivers for exceptional sound quality with outstanding top-notch clarity, well-defined, and detailed bass. It is more comfortable and lightweight than its previous model.
Drawback: The headphone cord length is a little short and the open-back design leaks sound. The headphone is a bit expensive.
The Bottom Line: If you have always wanted to get a pair of high-end excellent-sounding headphones but don’t want to spend a bulk of money on it, then the HiFiMan HE-400i can be the best pair for you.

HiFiMan HE-400i Planar Magnetic Headphones – Review
Its predecessor was launched back in 2012, HiFiMan HE-400 headphone. That is a full-size model still available in the market, The company is known for making superior sounding headphones that perform better than the prosperous-looking sleeker headphones from name brands like Sennheiser, Bowers & Wilkins, and Beyerdynamic. Now, HifiMan has launched its newly redesigned high-end full-size headphone – “HiFiMan HE-400i”.
HE-400i has thin-film “planar-magnetic” flat drivers just like the previous model HE-400. The Planar magnetic drivers deliver more clear and dynamically alive sound than the usual headphone drivers which work like a miniature cone or dome speaker drivers.

The box of the HE400i looks premium and elegant, it beats the packaging of SUNDARA, the case is strong and is made out of premium materials. Inside the case are the 3.5mm link, 3.5 to 6.35 connector, paperwork, and the earphone itself. The package is simply alright, I simply trust that there’s a conveying fabric sack at any rate just on the off chance that you don’t have any earphone hard case and you need to carry it around from home to the workplace.

Improvised Design and better Comfort
In the HifiMan HE 400i review, when we compared it with the previous model, it came out as more comfortable and lightweight. It weighs 370 grams (13.05 ounces) whereas HE-400 weighs 440 grams (15.5 ounces). The headband is also redesigned, it has an “improved pressure pattern” to fit onto the head properly. The resigned improved design of hybrid earpads is made of pleather and velour. These redesigned earpads not only improve comfort but also enhances sound quality.
You can use HE-400i headphones with a receiver or headphone amplifier, although it works well with portable devices, then you may want a touch more volume. These headphones are designed to use at home, office, or music studios.

The length of the cord is a problematic change. The previous model HE-400 has 10 feet long cord whereas the new model only measures half of the length of HE-400 at 59 inches (1.5 meters). The cord length is fine if you are using the headphones with mobile devices but the length felt short if you’re sitting on a couch and connected the headphone to a home receiver.
The cable is Y shaped, the side of the double ends attach to both earcups of the headphones through a gold-plated connecter. The gold-plated connector not just enhances the design and look but also improves the long-term electrical performance of the Headphones. The gold connector never deteriorates or becomes rusty. The bulky cables included in the package are tough to replace if it gets broken but it would last longer than the skinnier wires of other headphones.

The cable ends have a 3.5mm gold-plated plug. The Headphones come with an extra 6.5mm gold-plated adapter that is equipped for the 3.5mm plug. The package does not come with any more accessories and does not include any carrying case. Although, you can store them in the stylish luxurious box in which they got shipped.
The HE-400i headphone has an open-back design, which intends to deliver a more open and spacious sound than any other model. This is surely true for the HE-400i, but the drawback of this design is that it leaks sound. In simple words, the music playing in the headphones are not only audible to you but also the person sitting close to you. These headphones will not be suitable for wearing in a densely-packed open-office situation.

Extraordinary Sound Quality and Performance
The HE-400i is an extraordinary but expensive headphone at the price value of over $300. The HiFiMan HE-400i sounds remarkably better than the Bowers & Wilkins’ flagship P7 headphones and have more transparent and strong sound. the HE-400i’s clarity shouldn’t be confused with the slender brightness or hyped treble of its sound. The HE-400i headphone lets you hear more deeply and enjoy the music more. It enhances your music listening experience and feels like watching through a clear window.
As we already mentioned, it sounds open and spacious. Hans Zimmer’s majestic orchestral score for “Man of Steel” projected a bigger more expansive sound over the HE-400i. The sound clarity is great, every instrument sound blended and easily distinguished from each other. The mid-range is forward yet warm and the headphones really proficient with albums such as the Punch Brothers’ “The Phosphorescent Blues.
The P7 has more heavy and powerful bass but the HE-400i have more well-defined bass and not any less than the P7. LCD Soundsystem’s percussive beats driving “On Repeat” had plenty of energy but lost some of their attack and crispness on the P7.
The HE-400i sounds more proficient and have better sound quality than the previous model HE-400. Your phone may not have enough capacity if you feel like the sound is not loud enough. On iPhone 5S, it was just loud enough with most tracks, indoors.
When it was plugged into FiiO’s X3 portable high-resolution music player, it delivered the best sound quality and a lot more volume. The HE-400i’s sound quality remarkably improved.
HiFiMan HE-400i headphones sound best with the audiophile music players or at home plugged into an AV receiver or headphone amplifier. It clearly shows the HE-400i headphone is designed for audiophiles. The HE-400i’s bass strength, dynamic kick, and overall clarity show remarkably enhances when plugged into a device that is a little more effective than the usual smartphone or iPod.
HifiMan HE-400i vs HE-400
The HE-400i is a more superior sounding headphone than the HE-400 with slightly more transparency, better-defined bass, and a little more forward mid-range. The latest model is also more comfortable and efficient than the previous model.
